Patience is a well-known card game. Millions of people play this game from the comfort of their own home, but casinos offer it as well. Playing a Patience game is a great way to relax after a hard day of work. Even famous people like Napoleon Bonaparte and Winston Churchill liked this casino game. Perhaps historical decisions were even made after a game of Patience! How to you play it?
Patience is a game for one person with several playing cards. The name of this game probably originated in France and relates to the fact that many people don’t bring it to a good end. Most people simply don't have enough patience for it!. People in Great-Britain also call this game ‘Patience’, although in American-English it’s known as ‘Solitaire’. ‘Solitaire’ is the French word for ‘alone’ because there is only one player involved. Interestingly enough, people in the South of the Netherlands and Flanders call it ‘Mochelen’.
German or Scandinavian roots
Although the name suggests otherwise, Patience isn’t French in origin. It probably as German or Scandinavian roots. The game was mentioned for the very first time in 1783, when a German reading called Das neue Königliche L'Hombre-Spiel appeared.
Later on, it was also mentioned in the British book Illustrated Games of Patience (1870), quickly followed by other anthologies as well.
Travelers brought the card game to France, where it became incredibly popular in the 19th
century. It also reached America and England in the last half of the same century.
In the 20th
century casinos appeared everywhere on the planet. These places offer a wide variety of card games, including Patience. You can play it for free on the computer as well. The basic rule of Patience is quite simple. First you receive 52 cards, which are ordered in four piles. They’re sorted by color, and divided into a stock pile and seven rows. The first card is the Ace and the last card the King. The deck begins with one card, and every next row has a closed additional card. The top cards are faced up on the playing table.
Time and perseverende needed
You need to clear all the Patience cards, which means that all the Spades, Hearts, Clubs and Diamonds need to be sorted. Is that the case? Congratulations, because then you’ve won Patience!. However, this card game does take a lot of time and perseverance. You need to concentrate a lot to make the foundations complete. So don’t take your eyes of the screen! Be warned: the game can be quite hypnotizing…
Patience in online casinos
Perhaps you think that Patience is only played on the computer screen at home. This isn’t true, because online casinos have discovered it as well. For example, Oranje Casino is one of the places where you can enjoy this great card game. Another great online casino is Kroon Casino, because it has a very professional gaming environment. You always place in a safe and secure place over there. These online casinos both offer some great advantages during Patience, because with every card being cleared you win about 10 percent of your deposit. You already break even when you clear 10 cards, for example when you have 4 Aces.
Timeless and classic card game
Patience is a timeless and classic card game meant for the individual. The computer is your only opponent. So if you like to play against other people, this is not your game. Some people can’t get enough of it though. They also like to try other versions, for example ‘Patience Clock Game’. It’s an exciting game with simple basic rules. The rules of Clock Patience are a little bit different than the traditional game. For example, you need to make a ‘clock’ from all your cards. Similar to Patience, the Clock version is also based on luck.
Shuffle and arrange piles like a clock
During Clock Patience, you need to shuffle your cards first. Count your cards to make sure that you have 52 of them. On the computer, the shuffle is done automatically. Place all your cards on the ‘table’ and arrange the cards in 12 piles of four cards. During the game you need to make 12 piles of four cards in a pattern like the hours of a clock. They need to be put face down on the table, until there are four cards. Actually, all the piles represent a number of the clock. You also put a card in the middle of the ‘clock’.
Flip the cards
Now you’re ready to play Clock Patience. Take a card from the pile in the center. Imagine that you have a two. Put these cards next to the cards that represent the number 2 of the clock. You also need to place these cards beside the pile that corresponds with the right clock mode. When you’ve done this, you need to flip the card on top. Continue to do so, by placing a card next to the number it corresponds with. The main goal is that you flip the cards until all the piles are cleared. This is quite a challenge actually. If four kings appear first, there is no card to flip anymore. In that case you lose.
Game of chance
Patience and Clock Patience are definitely very exciting games, but completely based on chance. There are no strategies to be successful actually. The only thing you need is patience, perseverance and a lot of luck. We sincerely hope that Lady Fortune is on your side!
